This week we have been delighted to showcase a new and completely different venture for us.
Six months ago the idea to make our own silver bars, ingots and coins was floated. At first it seemed like an impossible dream, but we have pursued it and, this weekend, Volui Silver was launched with the first 26 of our silver bars coming on to the market.
As antique buyers and sellers, scrap silver naturally accumulates with us and it seemed a shame to let it languish or to dispose of it. In such a poor condition that it is unusable, we decided that if we could use this silver to create a new product, it would give it a new lease of life and bring a new product to people. With our ethos of renewing and reusing, it seemed a perfect solution.
Our silver products are individually designed and then created using the ancient sand casting method. The origin and history of sand casting lies in pre-recorded history. The method was prevalent in Egypt, Mesopotamia and ancient China. The method means that every single bar that we cast is different, even if we use exactly the same mould each time. For us, this is a huge bonus and means that every single item we produce is different; some times in small ways and other times more significantly.
Following casting every item is hand finished and aged before being submitted to Birmingham Assay Office to be thoroughly examined, x-rayed and hallmarked, confirming it's status as either .925 or .999 silver. The items are then hallmarked with the Birmingham Assay mark of an anchor, the Lion Passant (confirming the item is made of Sterling quality silver), the .925 or .999 symbol and our unique VOL trading hallmark contained within a shield shaped motif.
